Yeah I know that makes no sense. What I mean is this book is a light, easy read but does not fall into the common trap of having no substance and relying on cliches.

The story is told entirely by Jo, a compassionate and headstrong woman. She poses as a boy in a desperate attempt to keep her sisters out of poverty and off the streets and applies to be a companion to an old man. He teaches her about all sorts of things and funds her education to a prestigious school for boys.

There she finds bullies but also friends, and people who fall somewhere in between. She also finds herself and eventually, her passion. She is prone to immaturity and melodrama, but is also determined, curious, and open. Her deepest flaw and the one which repeatedly comes back to bite her is her judgemental nature. A good, well rounded heroine needs to have an ugly flaw and this is hers. She is not snooty or sneering, but tends to make snap judgments with little to go on.

She decides one instructor is snake-like and loathsome based on their first meeting. Charles is, okay he is kind of harsh but he ultimately becomes her love interest.

Some of her friends turn out not to be friends and some enemies become not so antagonistic. Even the cliched 'other woman' has a surprising depth to her, as do all the antagonists.

This is a book with a lot of charm and a lot of heart. It is quite clean, but don't worry! It isn't remotely religious (I don't even think it is brought up at all). My only issue is I wish Ms. Greenville had not flats forwarded through the parts she did. Particularly with her initial employment and her immediate after school activities.

The Girl who was a Gentleman Victorian Romance Historical edition by Anna Jane Greenville Romance eBooks Reviews

I really enjoyed this story - the character of Joanna, specially, shows a great deal of depth and bravery in some very unusual circumstances. I love reading about kick-ass female characters who accomplish great things besides just the stereotypical "happily ever after". I would heartily recommend this to anyone who enjoys historical fiction. This was a voluntary review after being offered an ARC from the author.
